5 Maternity Must Have Summer Outfits

Hi friends! How are you handling the heat this week? I was laughing with my mom recently because I mentioned the phrase “sweating more than a sinner in church” and then changed it to say “sweating more than a pregnant lady in the south in July”. It is hot out and there’s not much we can do about it although I have noticed that if I wear certain outfits, I can keep myself marginally cooler, keyword being marginally.

Here are five summer maternity outfits that are a must have for anyone expecting a baby.

A cotton tank and denim shorts

Probably not the first outfit you would think right?! Having a solid pair of shorts you can throw on is a must have for any warm weather wardrobe, especially maternity. I’ve found many times I struggle with finding something to wear because I don’t know what will fit or be comfortable, so having a standard pair of shorts whether its for a backyard party or just for a random weekday outfit can help immensely. It helps to be able to know they will fit no matter what part of pregnancy you are in and look good. I usually pair my shorts with a solid color tank or t-shirt so that when I re-wear things frequently it’s not as noticeable. (Although this week I washed my white tank with a blue towel, so that’s a bit of a pickle for me)

A dependable, comfortable workout outfit

If you’re not a regular exerciser this may not apply to you as much, but having a really good workout outfit option or even just an awesome pair of leggings can be the deciding factor for how active you are during your pregnancy. With my earlier pregnancies I did not have as many options that were comfortable when l got into the later weeks, so I felt less inclined to go to the gym (I actually dropped my gym membership when I was pregnant with Sophie). Once I discovered a really good workout outfit option for later in my pregnancies I was able to feel comfortable working out up to my due dates. Having a good, comfy pair of leggings later into pregnancy in general is very helpful so I have actually purchased multiple pairs of the same kind of pants to not have to do laundry every day. Being active while you are pregnant, even just going for regular walks is incredibly helpful but not possible if you don’t have the right things to wear!

A comfortable and cute dress

Having a comfortable dress that will look nice and not require too much thought or time getting ready is essential to any mom’s wardrobe but paramount for a maternity wardrobe. As someone who has struggled with body image in the past I try not to spend too much time worrying about clothes but it becomes increasingly difficult when you are pregnant and growing out of your clothes all the time. I’ve found that having a really easy, comfortable, nice looking dress can make a huge difference. Actually a few of those will make your whole summer easier. Just rotate which one you pick and know that you will feel comfortable and look good!

A maternity bathing suit

I put myself through some really uncomfortable maternity bathing suit experiences on beach trips over the years and it made me not want to take those trips. This year for my birthday my mom gifted me with a really spectacular maternity bathing suit and it has made such a difference for our beach time this summer. While at the beach I could just switch from one bathing suit to another instead of putting clothes on because the bathing suits felt more comfortable than regular clothes. It really helps to know that I have a good option that will feel comfortable, look nice, and function well for chasing after other kids. This is the top I am wearing and this the skirt!

A nice pair of nursing/ maternity pajamas

Right after Emily was born, my mom showed up to the hospital with a present for me. I thought it was one of the most kind things someone could do for a new mom, so I’ve tried to do the same for friends. Instead of buying baby presents its so nice to have a practical gift for the new mom. The gift my mom gave me was a nice maternity/nursing pajama dress. At first I didn’t think I would use it much but was incredibly grateful for her gesture. It’s true that moms know best, because I quickly realized my postpartum body wouldn’t fit into most of my old pajamas plus none were nursing friendly. I ended up purchasing several more just like the ones she gave me and they have served me so well through all my pregnancies and years of nursing. Not only do they fit throughout my entire pregnancy but also the added ease during nursing sessions is invaluable. I have loved these dresses so much I’ve washed holes into them and had to replace one or two. I find them to feel so much better than a frumpy t-shirt when I am feeling frumpy myself and in the first few weeks postpartum I live in these because I can throw a little cardigan on I don’t really have to get dressed if there’s a last minute visitor. I would say this is an all year maternity wardrobe must but especially necessary in the summer when you have a harder time staying cool if you are pregnant or postpartum when you are trying to regulate your body temperature.

So there you go! A few things to add to your list if you are expecting or some good gift ideas if you know someone who is expecting. Now I’m off to go stick my head in the freezer and try to beat this heat!
